What Reese Eats

The other day someone made a comment to me about my dog’s diet and the affordability.  I understand that some people are not in the position to feed their dogs the best diet, me included.  I hope someday to be at the point where Reese is on a full PMR diet because that’s what I believe is the best diet for my dog.  For now, I happily feed her Farmina N&D kibble, and change up the proteins for her.  I choose to feed her a higher end kibble that has had no recalls and that has high quality ingredients.  While the price is slightly higher than other kibbles, it was our choice to feed her what we see best.  There are a handful of other kibbles I almost fed her, that I would still recommend.  Open Farm being my number two choice.

I supplement her meals with things like organic frozen fruits, yogurt, supplements from Wildly Blended, dehydrated fish from Girls Gone Raw, Sardines, raw chicken hearts, raw duck feet,  and freeze-dried raw patties from Stella and Chewy’s, and her most favorite thing of all, her quail eggs from Lone Star.  The blueberries provide a source of fiber, antioxidants and vitamins C and K. These nutrients support her immune system and are ultimately her absolute favorite.  Other fruits she gets are blackberries, strawberries, mangos and pineapples.  Frozen bags of these at your local grocery store should run about $3-4 a bag and can be rotated and spread out and can last for some time because you’re not giving them tons at a time.  She may get 2-4 pieces once a day. I rotate her supplements from Wildly Blended, we have almost all of them and I intend to make a post about our favorites (okay, all of them) down the road. I buy a $15 bag of Stella and Chewy’s Freeze-Dried Raw Dinner patties, I cut these into fours, crush it and sprinkled it on top of her bowl.  These end up lasting a for a while because I space them out and it’s added once a day.  The dehydrated raw patties I crush up, just add protein, and same with the quail eggs, which she eats shell and all.

Reese also freakin’ LOVES and lives for yogurt.  I buy store brand big containers for around $4 and that can last until expiration.  She will ALWAYS get her food soaked in warm water and Goat Milk (We love Answers goat milk, or Primal for flavored.) Soaking your pups food is super important because the water/broth/ect softens the food, this allows it to be easier to swallow and easier to digest.  It also helps your dog's digestive enzymes not have to work as hard to properly digest their food. Also, if your dog doesn’t drink a lot of water, this can be helpful, and it can also keep their urinary tract clean and in good working order! We have recently started incorporating Sardines into Reese meal time to help with her coat and winter skin irritation.

So, all in all, you don’t have to spend a lot to give your pup a quality good diet.  Our most expensive things are literally the actual supplements that I get from Wildly Blended, but those are the most important for us and Reese’s diet.

I created a spreadsheet to break down the cost of what it currently costs to feed Reese. I would be happy to share the links and the spreadsheet with anyone who asks!

It costs us $2.95 per day to feed Reese, which is about $90 per month
